Hard family papers, 1834-1955 and n.d.

Collection (03-134) consists primarily of correspondence (1834-1913) among members of the Hard and Eyles families. Primary figures represented in the collection include Dr. Hanson Hard (1821-1896) of Ohio and Indiana; his wife, Elizabeth Whitney Hard (d. 1851); their daughter, Coralinn Hard Eyles (1848-1925); and her husband, William Newcomb Eyles (1838-1892). Topics comprise largely family and travel news from wide-ranging locations, including Ohio; New York; Philadelphia; and DeLand, Florida. There are also related documents, such as a book of poetry by Coralinn Hard Eyles; obituaries for many of the correspondents; legal papers; and genealogical research information. Specific areas documented are Elizabeth Hard's early life in New York and young motherhood, including her grief at the loss of two infant children; and Civil War news. A transcribed account of Dr. Hanson Hard's experiences as a prisoner of the Confederate army (covering a stint at Andersonville prison) is also included. Acquired as part of the George Washington Flowers Collection of Southern Americana.
